‘Deeds not Words’: Endell Street Military Hospital commemorates the hospital founded by two suffragist doctors and whose all-female medical staff treated over 26,000 patients and performed more than 7,000 operations between 1915-1919. Digital Drama were awarded a £73,900 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the project in partnership with the Women’s Library at the London School of Economics, to produce an immersive drama, creative banner making workshops and touring exhibition to explore the lives of those who worked and were treated at the Endell Street Military Hospital.
All eight performances of the immersive drama were a sell-out at the Swiss Church on Endell Street, Covent Garden in July 2017, involving a 30 strong cast and crew of professionals and volunteers. Banner workshops were led by community artist Becci Kenning of Art in Transit with residents of Dudley Court Sheltered Housing (on the site of the hospital), local pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School and residents of St Mungo’s hostel. The banners, inspired by the Suffragette banners held at the Women’s Library and the work of the hospital, are touring in the borough of Camden and can be seen at the Women’s Library at the London School of Economics until October 2017 and then at the Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre until December 2017.
