Women Unite: Field Dames WI
We felt it was really important to include suffragette colours – as a direct homage to women who originally fought for the vote, and as a reminder that there is so much still to fight for when it comes to women’s rights. We wanted it to be inclusive, about all women, not about race, sexuality etc. The green woman in the headscarf is in homage all the women who worked in industry and on the land in WWII.
The three women are meant to represent women from the past 100 years, a suffragette, a factory worker and a young women. In the 1950s and 60s, many women in Enfield worked in manufacturing and industry, so the middle image represents one of these workers. We also agreed early on that we wanted to include the suffragette colours of green and purple, but with silver rather than white to jazz it up a bit! And we wanted something bold with a clear message, inspired by protest banners of the past, and the slogan ‘Women unite!’ seemed to say it all!
